March the third, according to the lunar calendar marks the day to pay homage to the God of Marriage and Procreation in China. People of the north and south have different traditions for marking the annual festival.

March third, that's the third day of the third lunar month, used to be known as "the Girls' Festival" in northern China. Every year, a ceremony was held marking the passage of the community's 16-year- old girls into adulthood.

In Shaanxi Province, the ancient ceremony saw a revival Tuesday. Girls dressed up in colourful, traditional Han attire and wore their hair in styles that date back to long ago. The ceremony lasted for over an hour. The purpose of the rite was to make girls aware of the change in their roles and responsibilities as they pass from childhood to adulthood.

In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of south China, thousands of Zhuang people took to the streets in their ethnic attire, celebrating by singing and dancing.

Ethnic minorities in many parts of China held celebrations.

March third in the lunar calendar is also the day for ablution, a traditional rite for washing away any vestige of bad luck.
